MOVING GUIDE · TEMPLATE
Free moving box inventory template
Download a free moving box inventory template: one row per box, with the box number, the room it’s going to, what’s inside, and Open first and Fragile columns. It’s a CSV file, so it opens in Excel, Numbers and Google Sheets. No email, no sign-up.
What’s in it
Three example rows to show the idea, then blank rows numbered 4 to 10. Delete the examples and add as many rows as you have boxes.
| Box | Room (new home) | Contents | Open first | Fragile | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kitchen | Kettle, mugs, tea, coffee, 2 plates, cutlery | Yes | Yes | |
| 2 | Bedroom | Sheets, pillows, duvet | Yes | Main bed | |
| 3 | Living room | Books A to M, board games |
How to use it
- Number the box before you fill it, and write the number and the room on the top and two sides. (More in how to label moving boxes.)
- Fill in the row before you tape it shut. Afterwards you’re guessing.
- Name the things you’ll go looking for. “Passports, chargers, the good scissors” beats “desk stuff”. Search only finds what you wrote down.
- Mark Open first for the few boxes you’ll need on night one.
- Keep a copy on your phone (Files, iCloud Drive or Google Drive) and print one for the new home. Sort by Room before printing, so each room’s boxes are together.
When a spreadsheet stops being enough
A spreadsheet is fine for twenty boxes and one person. It gets awkward when you want a photo of what went in, when you’re searching on your phone halfway through unpacking, or when you want to tick things off as the truck empties.
That’s what My Moving Buddy (our app) is for. Each item has its box number, place, photos and an Open first switch. Search finds “kettle” or “box 12”, and a moving-day checklist ticks items off as they arrive. It can still give you a spreadsheet: Save a copy exports Excel, CSV or a printable PDF that lists each box.

One honest limit: the app can import a spreadsheet, but box numbers and places don’t come across: it brings in item rows as groups. If you think you’ll want the app, start there rather than in the template.
My Moving Buddy (our app) keeps the list on your iPhone: box numbers, photos, Open first, search and a moving-day checklist. Free for your first 30 items, then a one-time unlock. No account.
